John Locke s i Second Treatise of Government i c is perhaps the key founding liberal text i A Letter Concerning Toleration i written in a year when a Catholic monarch came to the throne of England and Louis XIV unleashed a reign of terror against Protestants in France is a classic defense of religious freedom Yet many of Locke s other writings not least the Constitutions of Carolina which he helped draft are almost defiantly anti liberal in outlook br br This comprehensive collection brings together the main published works excluding polemical attacks on other people s views with the most important surviving evidence from among Locke s papers relating to his political philosophy David Wootton s wide ranging and scholarly introduction sets the writings in the context of their time examines Locke s developing ideas and unorthodox Christianity and analyzes his main arguments The result is the first fully rounded picture of Locke s political thought in his own words, This presentation discusses the life of John Locke the evolution of his ideas and the political conflicts in th Century England which led to the writing of Two Treatises of Government The famous Second Treatise which contains Locke s central ideas on rights government and revolution is examined in detail Special attention is given to Locke s theory of private property which has influenced law and government for over two centuries, TO EDWARD CLARKE of Chipley Esq SIR THESE thoughts concerning education which now come abroad into the world do of right belong to you being written several years since for your sake and are no other than what you have already by you in my letters I have so little vary d any thing but only the order of what was sent you at different times and on several occasions that the reader will easily find in the familiarity and fashion of the stile that they were rather the private conversation of two friends than a discourse design d for publick view, Among the most influential writings in the history of Western political thought John Locke s i Two Treatises of Government i and i A Letter Concerning Toleration i remain i i vital to political debates today more than three centuries after they were written The complete texts appear in this volume accompanied by interpretive essays by three prominent Locke scholars br br Ian Shapiro s introduction places Locke s political writings in historical and biographical context John Dunn explores both the intellectual context in which Locke wrote the i Two Treatises of Government i and i A Letter Concerning Toleration i and i i the major interpretive controversies surrounding their meaning Ruth Grant offers a comprehensive discussion of Locke s views on women and the family and Shapiro contributes an essay on the democratic elements of Locke s political theory Taken together the texts and essays in this volume offer invaluable insights into the history of ideas and the enduring influence of Locke s political thought br
